The Union Buildings are considered South Africa's Architectural Masterpiece! Designed and built by Herbert Baker and completed in 1913, the Union Buildings houses the Administrative offices of the Union of South Africa. Today it is still the official seat of Government and houses the offices of the President of South Africa. It is situated on Meintjieskop and overlooks the City. The Union Buildings were completed in 1913.
The Building is made from light sandstone and is over 275 m long. It is built in a semi-circle design with two wings at either side. The wings represented the union of a formally divided nation i.e. the English and the Afrikaners. On the grounds are the Dellville Wood War Memorials, which pay tribute to South African troops who died during the First World War. The terraced Gardens are magnificently laid exclusively with indigenous plants and boast a 9000 seat amphitheater. There are various Monuments and Statues within the spectacular Gardens.

In 1898 Sir Thomas Cullinan was handed a three carat diamond found along a farm fence. He studied the area and came to the conclusion that the diamond was washed down from a nearby hill. Sir Cullinan made an attempt to buy the land from the owner, Joachim Prinsloo, but did not succeed. After Prinsloo’s death, he was able to purchase the land for ₤52,000 from Prinsloo’s daughter. The Cullinan kimberlite was discovered in 1902 and in 1903 open pit mining commenced. The mine was named the Premier mine.
On 25 June 1905, the famed Cullinan Diamond, the largest in the world at 3,106 carats (621.2 g), was discovered by Frederick George Stanley Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company. It was bought by the Transvaal government and presented to King Edward VII.
The town of Cullinan owes its existence to the diamond mining in this area, much like Kimberly.

For bird lovers, there is a bird hide very close to the water’s edge. Make sure you take note of the fish eagles, kingfishers and cormorants circling the dam. All of these places provide many a fantastic opportunity to photograph the plentiful array of fauna and flora.
